BHAVNAGAR : was founded in 1723 A.D. by Bhav Singhji, member of the Gohil Rajput clan which came to the Saurashtra coast from Rajasthan in the 12th century. It grew into one of the 15 richest princely states in India during the early - 20th century. The Nilambagh palace hotel was built in 1859 AD as the Yuvraj bunglow (Residence of the crown prince) by a German architect, Mr. Simms and became the royal residence.

PALITANA - 53 kms from Bhavnagar, Palitana lies at the foot of the hill of Shatrunjay, a climb of 2.5 kms up which must be undertaken on foot. One of the chief places of pilgrimage of the Jain faith. Palitana's 863 temples have an intensely mystic appeal. The largest temple is devoted to Adinath, the last of the 25 apostles of the Jain faith. LOTHAL - site of the ancient Harrappan civilization dating as far back as the 2nd millennium B.C. Lothal has tremendous archaeological significance. It was once a flourishing port is borne out by the excavation of brick built inland lockyard connected to the river Bhogavo and from there to the Arabian sea. GULBARGA: The district headquarters, was formerly known as Kalburgi. The town rose into prominence during the early Bahmani period when the founder of this dynasty his capital from Daulatabad. Gulbarga continued to be the capital of this kingdom till about 1,424 AD.

The Fort originally built by Raja Gulchand, it was later strenghthened by Ala-ud-din Bahmani. The Fort contained 15 towers and 26 guns of which one was 8 mts long. Within the ramparts of the fort, there is an imposing mosque which resembles the great mosque of Cordona in Spain. This mosque is the only one of its kind in the entire country. Several tombs of the Bahmani Sultans can be found in the eastern outskirts of the town.

PATTADAKKAL: Delicately chiselled, rich in detail, the Papanatha, Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna temples are examples of the Chalukyan sculptural art. The brick pillared mandapa (3-4 century) in front of the Sangameswara Temple. The latest (9 century AD) is a Jain Temple from the Rashtrakuta period. A 2.6 m high Nandi in deep green stone, covered in a red floral cape, sits in front of the Virupaksha. This temple is still used for worship.

AIHOLE: The temple of durga and close to this is the semi circular apse, Chamnundi Devi trampling the buffalo demon Narasimha and aspects of Shiva abound here. There are 50 temples within the fort walls and 50 outside-instances of Hoysala, Buddhist, Jain, Dravida, Nagara and Rekhanagara styles. There is the Lad Khan temple to see where previously was the assembly hall and marriage hall and was chosen as the abode of a Muslim prince, Lad Khan.

Day 7: Hospet
HampiHAMPI: First sight Hampi looks like a giant play pen. It is said that, here goddess Hampi (Parvati) attained shiva. the market place with its ancient, roofless stalls as a riotof colour on festive nights, when the towering Virpaksha Temple is aglow with lamps. The Vittala Temple, slender columns echo with music when struck and stone flows in lyrical lines. One is overwhelmed by its delicately chiselled beauty. The Lotus Mahal is the Women's enclosure was inspired by the beauty of woman. Yonder lies the crumbling watch tower, guarded once by the enuchs from where royal maidens watched the festivity of the land. From the flat platform of the embellished Mahanavmi Dibba, royalty viewed Hampi astir with pomp, colour and reverlry during the nine bejewelled nights of Dusshera, the queen's bath is open to the sky, surrounded by a moat. Lotus-headed fountains once pouted perfumed water into its pool and from its overhanging filgreed balconies, ladies of the court watched the fun and frolic of the bath.Over it all watches the 6 metre tall Laksmi Narasimha, with great bulging eyes, he rests under the seven headed cobra's shelter, the monarch of all he surveys.

SHRAVANABELAGOLA - "White Lake of Jain Hermit" is the leading Jain pilgrimage centre of the Deccan. Amongst the temples is the 57 ft. colossal statute of the hermit Gomateshwara built in 985 A.D.
