SAMODE
: The village of Samode is on a former caravan route and although not
strictly in the Shekhavati region. The village with its local artisans
producing printed cloth and glass bangles, nestles within its old walls in
the dry rugged hills of the northern Aravallis. The old havelis and their
paintings are still full of character, at the head of the enclosed valley is
the remarkable Samode Palace now converted into a hotel. The palace is
fabulously decorated with 300 year old fine Shekhavati style wall paintings
which still look almost new. Around the first floor of the Durbar Hall are
magnificent kiosks, decorated like Shish Mahal.
EKLINGJI:
14 miles North-East of Udaipur is the village of Kailashpuri which is known
for its 108 temples surrounded by a high fortified wall, the whole complex
is known as Sri Eklingji temple and has been a holy site associated with
Lord Shiva since ancient times. The present structure however, date from the
16th century.
CHITTORGARH:
It is a heroic city proudest of all Rajput fortresses. If ever there was a
city which witnessed bloody carnage and rare sacrifice, it was this.
Ransacked three times, Chittorgarh represents the quintessence of Rajput
chivalry and valour. The ruins of the great monuments here depict the
innumerable deeds of heroism and sacrifice. On the crest of the enormous
grey hill, girdled by massive walls and seven majestic gateways, one
stumbles upon shattered palaces, a temple of Mirabai - the mystic poetess,
and the intricately carved nine storeyed tower of victory rising into the
sky. Near a Jain temple stands the tower of fame, built in the 12th century
in honour of Lord Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara (meaning incarnation
